Yagnob/Fanndarya:
When paddled: end of Aug., 2007
Volume: 500 cfs over pass from the town of Rufigar to 2,500 cfs at the confluence with the Zerafshan
There is a road up the Sarday Miyonna to the town of Rufigar. Rides can be gotten in Romit in Nivas or trucks going to the gold mine. From Rufigar, you must carry over a major pass with a good walking road. The whitewater is mostly runnable class IV with big boulders. Some scouting required. There is one gorge with a rock sieve that may or may not be runnable. After this the whitewater is continuous and gains volume through beautiful gorges to Anzob. Below Anzob the whitewater becomes larger, and there are several land bridges, the largest 3 km, that require portages. Below the Pasrudarya
confluence there is a mostly runnable and roadside canyon of class IV big water. After this there are more committing canyons that may or may not be runnable, depending on the water level and your enthusiasm for boily, surging must-make eddies.
Recommendations: Impress the locals, learn Sogdian, an 8th century language spoken only in the Yagnob valley.
